Gone are the days when silver, metal-based fillings are the only options for that pesky decayed or chipped tooth. At Wright Parkway Dental Center, when dealing with tooth restoration and fillings we pride ourselves in utilizing materials that are not harmful to our patients and materials that are esthetically pleasing.
Historically, the silver fillings most of us grew up with – known as dental amalgam – were the standard and sometimes sole option for cavity filling and tooth restoration needs. This metal-based material is typically composed of up to 50% liquid mercury and combined with various metals. While the jury is still out on the safety of this material long-term, as a practice we prefer to use other materials that we know are safe for our patients.
At Wright Parkway Dental Center, we use composite or ceramic fillings made from resin and porcelain that boast a bright white color mirroring the shade of your tooth. These options are not only more cosmetically satisfying, allowing patients to maintain the natural look of their teeth, they are also mercury-free!
The process is no different than that of an amalgam filling, and in fact it’s less invasive. While the amalgam fillings typically require removal of some healthy tooth as well, with the composite fillings only decaying tooth is removed. From there, the tooth will be cleaned and thoroughly dried to ensure proper adhesion of the filling to the tooth. The process is to apply the composite in layers and allow it to cure as we create the restoration.
We not only utilize this material for new dental procedures, but we can also safely remove the amalgam fillings from your mouth and replace them with one of these safer options. It’s a simple process that gives many peace of mind knowing that they do not have the potential toxins from the metal fillings in their body. We routinely use a rubber damn to isolate, as well as provide glutathione and vitamin C supplements that aid in the support of free radicals.
